Albright Thanksgiving Dinner – Now A Zero Waste Event

PRC-Zero-wasteWe are excited to announce that we will be working with the Pennsylvania Resource Council (PRC) to make the 2015 Albright Thanksgiving Dinner a Zero-Waste event. We will be recycling and composting almost all of the waste produced from both the cooking and the Thanksgiving Eve dinner. (We were not able to get compostable utensils for this years dinner).

Friends of Albright is committed to sustainability and we are happy to have the support of the PRC and many volunteers to make this possible.

What is Zero Waste? From the PRC website:

Zero Waste is a philosophy that aims to turn the “waste” from every process into resources for another process. In other words, outputs (waste) become inputs (resources) and nothing is wasted. This requires the designing and managing of products and processes to minimize and ultimately eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, this allows for the conservation and recovery all resources. Zero Waste represents an economic alternative to current waste systems, where new resources are continually required to replenish wasted raw materials.

If you are coming to attend the dinner or volunteer we will have detailed instructions on how to sort any waste so that it can be recycled or composted properly.

Given the arrival of cooler temperatures, Albright will hold Sunday morning worship services at EECM community house. While the congregation is eager to get back to worshiping in their own sanctuary, everyone is excited to be able to use the space at EECM and hopefully continue to engage all of the supporters of Albright in supporting the excellent work that EECM does in the local neighborhood and all over the county. Plans are in the works for Friends of Albright volunteer days at EECM – stay tuned for more details!

“Old church buildings ought to be saved.” Albright Featured in the Tribune Review

Great article about church buildings in Western, PA with a photo of Albright United Methodist Church on the front of the Living section of the Sunday paper!

Albright-Trib

Old churches historically, socially important to communities, Tribune Review, Sunday, September 27, 2015.

Old church buildings ought to be saved.

In our small towns, they are often the most prominent buildings around. In our cities, they are landmarks that provide identity for many neighborhoods.

They often have historical significance as the setting for important community events and as centers for providing social services.

What’s more, churches are likely to be the finest architecture present in any town or city neighborhood. They are invested with the best design, the most elaborate art and the best examples of craftsmanship in stone, glass, wood, metalwork and furnishings.

That artistry and craftsmanship cannot be reproduced today. The handwork and the details we see in so many churches are just not affordable anymore. When a church is torn down, all of that is lost forever.
